Only he wasn’t shaking like he was afraid of you, he was shaking like the guy who turned into a werewolf at the World Sci-Fi Con. You made your way to the showcase and started to grab for your Hugo, but it wasn’t there. “You looking for this?” as the ratty guy held it up. After his full transformation, you were less than impressed. He was the rattiest looking werewolf you have ever seen. You thought he looked more like a… “Coyote? Nice of you to know the difference.” He smiled wickedly at the startled look on your face. “Uh huh. Reading your mind. Oh, come on. Do I look like the kind of guy who would go around reading people’s minds?” “What are you doing here?” You were asking, careful to keep your back to the wall and your eyes on the coyote. But he didn’t seem to be interested in hurting you. “Thought I would stop by for a beer or two. Oh I like the new book…” He picked up your personal copy then tossed it back on the desk. His lips curled almost comically and shook his head. “But tell me, where did you get that title The murder of Vampire M? Kind of corny, don’t you think?” You stared at each other another full minute, then he finished off the beer and set the bottle down on the rough draft of your next novel. “Well, guess I’ll be going.’ He stopped, and turned as if by afterthought. “Oh… by the way… You know the hairbag you gave the headache to? Well, he has friends. It’s a wolf thing… Packs and all… Just thought you’d like to know.” He raised one eyebrow, clearly amused at your dumbfounded silence. “Sorry about the window.” “What?!?” you gasped as you glanced over at the window, just as he jumped out of it. Too bad he didn’t open it first. He drove off in your car, laughing. Two days later, the police found your car in the parking lot of the Raven nightclub. |
